British Romanian-born soprano Nelly Miricioiu made her Royal Opera debut in 1982 as Nedda (Pagliacci). Her many roles since for The Royal Opera have included Musetta (La bohème), Marguerite (Faust), Antonia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Valentine (Les Huguenots), Tosca, Margherita (Mefistofele), Norma and Elisabetta (Roberto Devereux). She is currently a mentor on the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme.

Miricioiu was born in Adjud. Her first UK performances were Violetta (La traviata), Puccini’s Manon Lescaut and Tosca with Scottish Opera. Her Covent Garden debut the next year was followed by her debuts at Paris Opéra, as Olympia/Giulietta/Antonia (Les Contes d’Hoffman), and at La Scala, Milan, as the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor. She has gone on to sing such roles as Gilda (Rigoletto), Mimì (La bohème), Armenaide (Tancredi), Margherita (Faust), Isabella (Robert le diable), Elisabetta (Don Carlos), Hélène (I vespri siciliani), Lina (Stiffelio) and the title roles of Semiramide, Maria Stuarda, Anna Bolena, Lucrezia Borgia, Tosca, Adriana Lecouvreur, Norma, Marie Victoire (world premiere), Madama Butterfly and Luisa Miller. She has performed for companies including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Bolshoi Theatre, English National Opera, Salzburg and Edinburgh festivals and in San Francisco, Verona, Ravenna, Zürich, Madrid, Geneva, Vienna, Washington, Brussels, Montpellier, Barcelona, Florence, Munich, Rome, Hamburg and Berlin, among others.

Miricioiu has a long association with Opera Rara, for which she has recorded Roberto Devereux, Mercadante’s Orazi e Curiazi and Emma d’Antiochia and Pacini’s Maria de Rudenz and Maria, regina d’Inghilterra. She has many decorations from the Romanian Royal House.
